Ny skade!

WOC-Preparations: Altitude. Physical. Technical. Mental.

Font Romeu. I have now spent 15 days here in Font Romeu, together with Olav Lundanes and Jonn Are Myhren. Font Romeu is a nice little village in the French Pyrinees, situated 1700-1800masl. The surroundings are beautiful, with mountains up to 3000masl and nice spruce forest areas, lakes and rich animal life (wild and cattle). The reason for the stay in Font Romeu is, anyway, high altitude training, an important part of  my preparations for WOC. Les mer //

No success in France

The WOC selection races in France was no success for me. I did too many mistakes to get the results and the feeling I was hoping for. My goal was to rock the rocks, but I felt more like being rocked out by the rocks. Les mer //

Clermont Ferrand. Again.

Last week I was on a private training camp in Clermont Ferrand. My goal was simply to feel more comfortable with orienteering in French technical demanding, rocky terrain.

Rocky feeling

I guess most of you readers have seen the films about the boxer Rocky Balboa. My favourite is Rocky IV, where he fights the big russian Ivan Drago. He fights against the impossible, but he never gives up and finally he manages to beat Drago. So, what has Rocky to do with orienteering? Les mer //

Handycap de l’année

Yesterday`s relay training was the 2nd of overall 4 high intensity trainings counting in the (highly unofficial but prestigeous) Training Camp Champs (TCC). It was a two man relay with 2*11 loops of 300-400m. As my team mate was the the strong finisher Håvard Lucasen, we were maybe the biggest favourites (I guess Olav and Anders wouldn`t agree;). But already at the start we basicly lost the chance for a victory as we were given the “biggest handycap of the year” (at least so far). Les mer //

An unvictorious routechoice

I guess all orienteers have experienced a bad routechoice. Often you discover the mistake while running (and gets really frustrated by your mistake, and the fact that you can`t do nothing to change your decision). But sometimes a detailed study of map and split times  is needed to discover the mistake. Yesterday I experienced the last option on the 18th control (see map without routechoice below – where would you run? Is it obvious?). There I also lost (definately) in the fight for the race victory. Les mer //

Sprint in Side – Disqualified 3 times, but not the 4th?

Today I ran the 2nd stage of Turkish O-cup, a sprint race in the old town of Side and the sanddunes just outside the town. It was a really nice terrain for sprint orienteering, but an area were it is hard to draw a precise and still readable map. Unfortunately the quality of the map (in my opinion) was not the best, with a couple of misdrawings and bad readability especially in the sandy area (see the maps with/without routechoices below). Turkey – positively all inclusive

I have to admit I was a little bit unsure what would meet me in Turkey. In my mind Turkey was an quite unknown orienteering nation. Would the maps be of good quality? Did they know how to make interesting courses? Would they know what is important on a training camp for elite orienteerers (restitution, living standard, drying clothes etc)? Les mer //
